Tips For Travellers To The Tropics

Author:
Source: articledashboard.com

I went on my first holiday to the tropics recently. I was afraid of catching a disease, so I did a bit of research, and took some precautions. Here are some tips I found useful.

1. Get your shots.

I spent a short time in areas relatively free of mosquito-borne disease. The key word is ‘relatively’. A two week holiday in an urban area is probably alright. If you’re staying for months, or in an area flagged as dangerous, get your shots well in advance. Don’t leave it until the last minute, as by then it’ll be too late! The drugs need some time to ‘kick in’, and your doctor may have to order them in advance.

2. Get an insect repellent.

I made one for mosquitoes by mixing citronella with olive oil. Citronella is an essential oil (an essence). I rubbed the mixture on all exposed areas morning and night, and after washing. Seemed to do the trick. I put too much oil in, I think, so it smelled a bit. Better that, than being bitten, I say!

3. Wear long sleeved shirts and trousers.

I also wore socks in bed. Give pests no purchase! Mosquitoes are just doing what comes naturally; they need your blood to live. It’s just unfortunate that they can pass on parasites when they bite. Deny them a meal, and the only things you’ll bring back from your holiday are a silly hat and some souvenir photos. To wear long sleeved garments in bed, you’ll need a room with a fan and air conditioning. No need to set them to freezing; just cool, with a slight breeze.

4. Air conditioning.

Air conditioning and fans are supposed to deflect mosquitoes, which is good. Avoid ‘going native’, and thinking you’re as hardy as the locals. They get malaria and dengue as well, be sure of that.

5. Use mosquito nets.

Do what you can to keep them at bay. Paranoia is good!

6. Avoid ice and salads

Ice can have faecal coliforms. It depends on what water it’s been made from. Salads can be prepared by low-paid workers who’ve forgotten to wash their hands. In Muslim countries, they often don’t use toilet paper, just a hose, so if the staff haven’t been scrupulous about their personal hygiene …

You may feel self-conscious about refusing. Would you like your holiday to be spoiled by a spell in hospital, in a Third-world country, just for the sake of avoiding embarrassment? People like people who are forthright, so stick to your guns.

7. Don’t drink the water.

A country can have a veneer of modernity, but what separates the men from the boys is the sewage system. The tap water may not be filtered properly. Drink bottled water, or water you’ve boiled yourself. Get a kettle, and boil it up every day, then put the water in your water bottle in the morning. Easy.

8. Drink plenty of water.

A few sips every so often, rather than a litre in one go. You’ll save on trips to the lavatory!

9. Stay out of the sun.

There’s a reason the locals are laid back; it’s too hot to run around like you do at home. Sun tanning is actually skin damage. Due to ozone layer depletion, you may be getting more than a golden tan. Who cares if you don’t come back home bronzed? Ladies especially will appreciate this in later years, when their sisters have leathery skin from roasting on the beach. Nothing less ‘cool’ than a white man with sunstroke, either.

When travelling in the tropics, it’s best to be paranoid. I hope you can still enjoy your holiday!

Holiday Cruises

Author: James M Murray
Source: articledashboard.com

Is anything more luxurious than taking a cruise holiday? Traveling to exotic locations on a luxury ship, catching sunrays, and breathing the salty breezes can renew and replenish anyone, no matter how shopworn from the cares of work. However, a cruise holiday requires planning in order to be the best it can be. Check out these tips to have a cruise experience you will remember.

So where do you start when planning a cruise holiday? First, what is your budget like? Do you need to hold down expenses? Then here are a few tips for economizing on your cruise holiday.

When scheduling your cruise holiday, you should be aware that there are off season and on season dates, and that you want to schedule your trip in the off season to get the best deal. What you may not know, however, is that cruise lines actually change prices a number of times throughout the year. Ask and find out when their absolute lowest season prices are. In addition, keep your plans somewhat flexible so that you can change ships at the last minute. Sometimes a ship is not filled to capacity, so the cruise line will sell the last few tickets at a real bargain. It is always to their advantage to sail filled to capacity because people on holiday spend money on souvenirs, drinks, etc. Use this knowledge to get a really great deal.

Where you cruise to on your holiday can make a big difference in your cost as well. If you pick a popular spot, you can travel cheaper than if you choose a less popular spot. Another consideration is whether you really care about those ports of call. If you just want to stay on the ocean liner and enjoy the luxuries, book a cruise that doesn’t stop anywhere. These “cruises to nowhere” are just as luxurious as the others but cost less.

To be safe on a cruise holiday, don’t take a lot of expensive equipment or jewelry with you. Make sure your passport, health insurance, and other papers are up to date. Be sure to ask about laws you may inadvertently be breaking when you get off the shore you are accustomed to. Laws in ports and even in the water can vary, and you sure don’t want a big hassle with a foreign law enforcement agency.

To travel lighter, find out about equipment that will be available on the ship. For instance, if the cruise line provides irons or hair dryers, you won’t need to pack yours. Also pack your own sample size shampoo, toothpaste, and other toiletries because these items will cost more in the gift shop. You should have access to laundry facilities on your cruise holiday, so you don’t have to take a huge amount of clothing. Pick a wrinkle proof lightweight outfit for every two or three days and pick separates in colors that coordinate so you can get different looks. Be sure to pack a formal and or semi-formal outfit if you will be taking part in these sort of activities on your cruise holiday.

Budget Holidays In Italy

Author: Keith Barrettbr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, with its fine cities, stunning architecture and glorious countryside. Dont be put off by the high accommodation prices in the big cities – it is possible to enjoy a holiday in Italy on a budget.

As with many locations, youll find that it is cheapest to visit Italy outside of the peak summer months. This is actually wise for other reasons too – the Italian cities tend to be swelteringly hot during the months of July and August.

Many complain that Italian hotel prices are high compared to other locations and that standards can be variable. Its certainly true that accommodation prices in the big cities are on a similar level to those that you might expect to experience in London, Paris or New York.

The reasons for such prices are clear: cities such as Florence, Venice and Rome attracts visitors from all over the world, due to the unique experiences that they offer.

If you want to reduce the cost of your holiday in Italy then one way to go about it is to make use of an escorted tour operator. Escorted holidays usually include the cost of your travel from the UK to Italy, as well as your accommodation once you reach Italy.

You can also expect to get at least one meal per day included in the cost of your holiday, while the inclusion of an experienced English-speaking guide can transform your holiday, allowing you to make the most of your visit to the country.

Most escorted holidays companies rely on customers returning to make use of their services on a regular basis. Indeed, its not uncommon for travellers to opt to use the same travel specialists on an annual basis.

As a result of their need to maintain a good reputation and attract returning custom, escorted holiday specialists tend to pick hotels of a high quality.

The end result often means that Italian escorted holidays offer real value, providing a great alternative to the stress and cost involved in attempting to book your holiday independently.

A further advantage to using such a service is that youll be able to choose an itinerary that allows you to visit a number of cities within Italy during your stay in the country.

Such flexibility can help to maximise the potential of your visit to this wonderful country./pbr

Advice On Planning Your Holiday

Author: nick raugebr

Holiday is the time for all of us to relax and get away from it all. But for some people lounging by the beach and drinking margueritas is not their idea of a good time. Maybe you are the type that enjoys a good adventure. Adventure holidays are a great way to spend your holiday if you have had enough downtime lately. You could go mountain climbing, whitewater rafting, paragliding or windsurfing.

If you prefer a romantic holiday with your girlfriend you should consider going to the carribean and enjoy your holiday under the sun. Of course the kind of holiday you will be able to have will also depend on the amount of money you are willing to spend.

Travel agencies usually offer different packages. often they will include airfare, hotel accomodations and car rentals. Try to search the web and see if you can put something similar together on your own at an even better price.

If you are ready to take a break but still have not decided where you want to go then here is an idea worth considering: You should try an all-inclusive vacation on a cruise line.

Have you sometimes read the low price travel ads offered by the local travel agents? Before you decide to pick one please make sure that what you are getting is actually worth buying. Often the ads advertised are not available for the prices shown but at much higher prices. The prices often exclude certain expenses such as insurance and transport fares between the airports as well as taxes.

Cheap holidays have always been in high demand. Try to compare package holidays and do it yourself holidays. Sometimes you just cannot compete with the price of a package holiday even though you put a lot of energy into it and try to do the booking yourself. Often you book a package holiday trough a travel agent and then everything about your holiday is arranged for you. In recent years the internet has made it possible to book the package holiday online but it also possible to do all of the booking yourself on the web.

Remember to take good care of your pets while you go on holiday. You could bring them to a pet boarding and grooming facility to make sure they will not suffer while you go away on holiday and enjoy yourself./pbr

Cheap Holiday Deals to New York – It is Possible

Author: Mark Y. Salmonbr

br
For cheap holiday deals to New York, a person would hopefully know someone that has a place in the Big Apple already. The largest expense to spending a holiday in NYC is their accommodations.

For those coming from England there are more deals than being currently offered to Americans. For 771 British pounds a person can stay for 7 nights in the Thirty Thirty. This is a hotel located on 30th street address 30. It is for 7 nights starting 3 days after New Years Eve. This is per person with double occupancy expected.

For those looking to stay where it is cheap, then stay out of Manhattan and look to Queens. You can still travel by public transport to all the major sites and attractions, but save on your accommodation cost.

Another consideration is the cost of getting to New York City. Most Americans travel everywhere by car. If this is your plan, be ready to pay between $25 and $50 a night just to park. There is one hotel that offers free parking to its guests, but there is only one of these in the entire city. If it is warm enough and the vehicle you are traveling is big enough, some would be better off just staying in their vehicle. Just do not do it for too many days or the stink will get to you.

A nice place for those on a budget should expect to pay $150 a night for a room while those looking for a really cheap holiday deals to New York can stay in a hostel for about $20.

Travel Gadgets: Handy Gizmos for Stress-Free Travelling

Author: Anna Clarebr
Source: articlerich.combr
br
There are so many things about travelling that can cause stress, that sometimes we wonder why we bother leaving the house at all.

For one thing, theres the packing. Stressing about whether or not theres room in your suitcase for everything you need on your trip can be a real headache – and if you go over your baggage weight limit, youll either have to pay the airline an excess baggage fee, or leave a few things behind.

But we say: Stress not! There are some excellent travel gadgets and accessories that can significantly reduce the stress of going on a trip, and weve selected a few of our favourites that can help you have a happier holiday.

Trace Me Luggage Tag

One of the things most likely to spoil your holiday is losing your luggage. Spending your entire trip wearing just the clothes you arrived in is painful enough, but knowing youll never see your precious suitcase contents again is deeply distressing.

With the Trace Me Luggage Tag you can greatly reduce the chances of losing your luggage forever. The Trace Me Luggage Tag is strong and durable, and contains an individual serial number and 2D bar code, linked for life to your registration details on a secure data storage system used by law enforcement agencies, airport baggage handling organisations and lost property services worldwide.

If your luggage goes astray, a simple scan of the Trace Me Luggage Tag will identify it as your property. Registering your Trace Me Luggage Tag is quick and easy to do online, and there are no recurring fees or subscription charges.

Travel Charger Adaptor

If you rely on mobile phones and other gadgets to stay in touch while travelling, the Travel Charger Adaptor is probably the most useful travel gadget you will ever own.

The Travel Charger Adaptor combines adaptors suitable for use throughout Europe, North America, Africa, Australasia and the Far East, as well as featuring a handy USB power socket for charging MP3 players and other gadgets that you would normally charge through your computer.

Digital Portable Luggage Scale

Airline baggage weight limits can be very confusing – they differ from one airline to another, and when you check your bags in at the airport theres always that little nagging worry that youve exceeded the limit and will have to leave something behind or pay an excess baggage fee.

With the Digital Portable Luggage Scale, youll never have this worry again. This handy travel gadget can handle up to 50kg – before you leave home, simply attach it to your case, wait for the beep, and read the weight. If youre over your baggage weight limit you can remove a few things and leave them at home, or pack them into your hand luggage instead.

The Digital Portable Luggage Scale can then be carried in your hand luggage so that you can check your bag weight again on the way home – which is very handy if youve stocked up on souvenirs and duty free goods during your holiday.

Paper Toiletries

Camping and backpacking holidays are lots of fun, but without a car to carry all the equipment in, you need to be quite strict about what goes in your luggage. Bottled toiletries can be heavy; even travel-sized bottles, if you carry enough of them, will weigh you down and make walking uncomfortable.

The best solution to this problem that weve seen is a fantastic range of paper toiletries that are ideal for travelling light. The range includes paper shampoo, paper shaving foam and paper anti-bacterial soap – simply remove a sheet from the small, lightweight pack, add water, and lather up.

Paper toiletries are also ideal for carrying in your hand luggage on flights; theyre not liquid, so they wont break any no-liquid regulations when you go through security checks at the airport.

Portable Solar Charger

The Portable Solar Charger is another travel gadget thats ideal for camping trips, when access to an electricity supply might be restricted.

The Portable Solar Charger contains a Li-Ion battery which is charged by the sun during the day. Once charged, the Portable Solar Charger can charge your mobile phone with enough power to talk for two hours, or load your MP3 player with power equivalent to six hours of listening time.

The Portable Solar Charger comes complete with cables and a selection of adaptors, making it suitable for a huge range of mobile phones as well as many iPod models.

Dont Cancel Your Holiday

Author: Alan Hawkinsbr
Source: ezinearticles.combr

Are Diesel and fuel prices getting you down? Yes, we all get a little depressed as we see our visit to the local fuel station slowly becoming our most expensive out-lay of the month!

In a moment of madness, I bought an SUV…..a modern euphemism for a large family sized station wagon which is usually fitted with either a 4×4 or differential lock option, if not immediately recognizable as such, there will be a mention somewhere about its ability to travel off-road or to handle our ever deteriorating roads better than the next one. So be it, we now have this large vehicle that no one else wants unless the price is dropped by at least 25% of what we paid for it some twelve months ago. Not only have the operational costs escalated but to compound the problem, monthly re-payments have also escalated…..this does not auger well as we plan the well earned family summer holiday.

Making some budget suggestions for holidays remains a little subjective, there are unfortunately those of us who will scoff at the idea of even attempting to plan a holiday this year as they might be experiencing financial difficulties so bad that this is a non-starter, on the one side there are those able to ride out the economic storm. Lets assume you are able to scrape together a budget for the family holiday but that you will need to approach it quite carefully.

• Look close to home. KZN residents do not have to travel to the Western Cape and vice-versa, for destinations, look nearer home. This has got to be our budget tip number 1. Reduce the travel time required and also the operational car costs and minimise fuel usage.

• The next important expense after travel costs is accommodation. The best option is to stay with a close family friend or relatives. No, please, for the sake of these poor hosts, this does not mean a free-loading holiday experience at the expense of your friends, it simply means eliminating the expense of a commercial profit. In all fairness, you will be required to at the very least supply food and refreshment at least equal to that consumed by you and your family.

• Have you thought of a house swap – you have a friend with a house in a suitable area who would like a change? Offer to swap houses or place a small advert to attract a like-minded family.

• Consider camping. For those of you who have not camped since being put off this years ago, take a new look at the great equipment available now. Yes, a little investment in this will go a long way. Camping is a low cost option and will take you to many affordable destinations, I can say without fear of contradiction that you will be pleasantly surprised and that you will probably do this again and again.

Holiday Travelers-summer Vacation Destinations

Author: JG Reaybr
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
When you think of holiday travel, what comes to your mind first? When thinking of holiday travel, many individuals automatically think of traveling to visit with family and friends for Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter. While these may be the most well-known holidays, they are not the only ones. In the summer months, many individuals and families make the decision to vacation on or around Labor Day or the Forth of July.

If you are interested in vacationing on or around Labor Day weekend or the Forth of July weekend, there are a number of important factors that you should first consider. Perhaps, the most important factor is number of other travelers on the road. As previously mentioned, a large number of individuals and families make the decision to travel on a summer holiday weekend. If you are interested in vacationing at a popular destination, you may want to take this into consideration.

In most of the world, summer is associated with sun, sand, and beaches. The majority of families that travel on Labor Day weekend or the Forth of July weekend are heading to the beach. There are a number of popular beaches that can be found in the United States and Europe. Popular beaches in the United States include Daytona Beach, Virginia Beach, and South Beach. St. Tropez, Cannes, Costa Smeralda, and Marbella are popular summer beach destinations in Europe.

When selecting a summer holiday vacation destination, it is important to keep what you need and want out of your vacation in mind. If you are looking for a romantic, but private getaway, you may want to avoid the above mentioned beaches. If large crowds and a lack of privacy will not have a negative impact on your vacation then you select just about any destination in the world.

Beaches can easily be considered the most popular summer vacation destinations, but they are not your only options when vacationing during a summer holiday. To many, Labor Day and the Forth of July mean outdoor barbeques and picnics. For this reason, public campgrounds and parks are popular summer vacation destinations. If you are interested in camping outdoors, grilling, and participating in outdoor activities, camping may be a great vacation for you and your family.

Outdoor camping is enjoyed by many. Its allure is privacy. Most campgrounds are founded in largely landscaped areas. Trees and large bushes often create private retreats. In addition to being found in wooded areas, public campgrounds can also be found along secluded beaches and in the mountains. State or national parks, which allow camping, and public campgrounds are often filled with a number of facilities. These facilities often include onsite laundromats, general stores, and game rooms.

Outdoor camping is most often perceived as sleeping outdoors in a tent. Tents are often the most used piece of camping equipment, but RVs are gaining popularity. If you do not own an RV, you can easily rent one from a number of locations. There are many individuals and families who enjoy taking a road trip throughout the United States or Europe.

Beaches and campgrounds are popular vacation destinations for summer holiday travelers. However, it is important to note that you should not limit yourself to the vacationing at the beach or camping. Additional fun-filled activities may include visiting a museum, zoo, or amusement park. When it comes to summer holiday travel, just about anything is possible./pbr

Cruising Holidays: Getting The Most For Your Money

Author: James Dyson -br
Source: articledashboard.combr
br
It is quite interesting when one consider diverse reasons people love cruising holidays and what such moments have to offer. On a general level, however, cruising holiday is attractive because it provides a bunch of peculiar benefits other holiday routes lack. Cruising is perfectly ideal for both family and single travelers, while the environment oozes romantic and exciting moments. Without doubt, the entire service evokes sophistication and gives a sense of well-being to customers on board. Additionally, its convenient, safe, relaxing, fun-filled and invigorating, and basically provides diverse programs that fit every age grouping on board. With these few points one can easily deduce the fact that cruising gives much more value for money than all other types of holiday you can ever imagine. So, if you have not been on a cruising holiday, what is so different about them compared to another holiday?

Cruising is all embracing

The term all-embracing simply implies that cruising empower you to have first hand knowledge of every item needed and objectively compute your expenses before leaving home with alone or with your family. For example, your complete include flight arrangement, air and sea programs without leaving out taxes are all considered. Again, during cruising you can easily move around to view various interesting scenes; you get to see different ports in different countries or towns that would have otherwise, cost you so much if you travel to see those places individually. Even entertainment for you and all your companions are not left out. Right on board, TV, music, theaters, casinos, night-club, concerts, orchestra and lots of other shows and lectures are well arranged to get you fulfilled. Most ships also have Internet facilities to communicate with your friends.

Enjoying the cuisine in comfort

Breakfast, lunch and certain beverages like tea are usually included in the price. This could save you the hassle of having to look for good places to eat or worry about the expenses. Most shipping companies will even serve you midnight buffet and much more. Do you like exercising your body? No problem – right there while cruising you can access modern gym, games, recreation facilities, pools, sauna and spas for your pleasure.

Other benefits

Most companies will also offer you free room service with few exceptions that require minimal charges. There is no boring moment as you can enjoy quiet time in a well stocked library, lounges and deck areas. Now, I could use more pages to spin out more mouth watering benefits of cruising holiday, but instead I want to advice you to carry a little research. Try to personally make more enquiries from your travel agent or ask, directly from a cruise company on one-on-one level. Or get direct information from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) about which line will meet your desires./pbr
