Making holiday travel planning can be hectic, and when those travel plans include making dog boarding arrangements some owners get as stressed as their canines. Here are a few tips that should help dogs enjoy their boarding and canine owners enjoy their holiday travels.

VACCINATIONS: Make sure your dog is current with vaccinations. If it needs booster vaccinations make sure you arrange to have them at least one week before your holiday boarding reservation because some dogs will display vaccination symptoms that resemble Bordatella or canine kennel cough. Most well-run boarding facilities will not accept dog guests that have any symptoms of illness. Make sure to ask the boarding facility what vaccinations they require when you make your holiday boarding reservation, and double check to make sure you have the proper vaccination documentation.

VETERINARIAN CHECK-UP: Although it is usually not required by boarding facilities, it is a good idea to have your veterinarian do a checkup if your dog is older, has chronic health problems, recent surgery, or special medication requirements. No one wants to be surprised by a pre-existing condition during your holiday boarding stay.

MEDICATIONS: If your pup is on medications make sure the boarding kennel is properly staffed and prepared for your dogs special needs. Also check your supplies and refill medications as needed.

SPECIAL DIETS: Most dog boarding facilities will arrange to keep your canine on its normal diet, but make sure you provide the dog food in special containers with written instructions for the boarding kennel. If your pup has a sensitive digestive system you may want to speak with the boarding kennel about skipping any planned holiday dog treats. Occasionally people that work at dog boarding kennels will spoil their canine guests with healthy dog treats and snacks, especially during the holidays!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: It is a good idea to make sure your dog holiday boarding kennel has a plan for natural disasters and dog medical emergencies. If the boarding facility needs to be evacuated does the kennel have a plan that includes cages, transportation and emergency destination for all of the boarding guests? And if there is a health emergency do they have relationships with local veterinarian clinics and local veterinarian hospitals?

SEPARATION ANXIETY: If your dog is naturally anxious, or if this will be its first boarding experience, you may want to choose a boarding kennel that offers doggie day care or dog park playground rental, and then visit the facility with your pup a couple of times prior to your holiday boarding reservation date. This will acclimate your canine to the boarding facility and the kennels staff, which may reduce your dogs anxiety while boarding.

COMMUNICATE: Dont be afraid to ask questions and raise your concerns with the dog boarding kennel. If you dog has special needs be sure you are 100% comfortable with the boarding kennels responses to any questions you may ask. And make sure you leave accurate contact information with the dog boarding facility so they can communicate with you if anything comes up.

With a little preparation your holiday dog boarding experience will be stress-free and enjoyable for you and your dog.
